Episode 19: How to Re-Center a Spinning Soul
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
In today's episode I share the story of a moment last month that left me in tears - partially out of sadness, partially out of shame, but mostly out of a soul that needed to be tended. What happened next reminded me of one of my soul's most vital needs in these days of distraction.

Episode 21: Your Brain on Joy
Thursday Sep 23, 2021
Thursday Sep 23, 2021
“Our brains need fuel to run properly” Michel Hendricks writes in The Other Half of Church. “The fuel that our brains were intended to run on is joy.” But most of us have a default emotion that is not joy and find it easier to get stuck in difficult emotions. The good news, however, is that we can reset our default emotion to joy with practice. In today's episode, I walk you through an exercise that was meaningful to me to get you started.

Episode 22: Where Joy and Sorrow Meet
Thursday Oct 07, 2021
Thursday Oct 07, 2021
In a world that tries to tie up hard things with a pretty bow, how do we embrace joy while resisting easy answers to suffering? In this story of a tender moment in the middle of tragedy, I explore the possibility that joy and sorrow can each make space for the other, if we will allow them.

Is it really possible that God feels good things about us? Why is it so much easier to believe that He is disappointed in us than that He delights in simply being in our presence? In this episode I share a story from my 18th birthday that God used recently to give me a glimpse of how He sees me.

Episode 24: Name it to Tame it
Thursday Oct 21, 2021
Thursday Oct 21, 2021
When difficult emotions arise, we all have ways of coping. Often we try to push our emotions down - to our peril - usually leading to simply being stuck in the emotion. What if instead of ignoring our emotions, we paid attention to them with Jesus? In this episode, I share a day in my life, walking through a difficult emotion and the practices that I am learning to engage that help create a pathway back to joy.

Today I introduce you to the first step of Immanuel Journaling, called interactive gratitude. Next week I’ll share the final steps of what has become a very meaningful practice for me. What I have come to understand through Immanuel Journaling is that gratitude quite literally opens the relational circuits in my brain, moving me from a difficult emotion to a place of openhearted connection. Let's explore it together.
